BARK in the Park Scheduled During FallFest - Added: Thursday, July 31st, 2008, 3:43 PM

BARK joins in the activity and fun of Fallfest by hosting Bark in the Park- a fundraiser JUST FOR KIDS! It gives them an opportunity to have a direct effect in the lives of homeless pets. All children are encouraged to join in the fun. This fundraiser works like a walk-a-thon, in that the participants get sponsors and pledges to walk their dogs in the park- Heritage Plaza. Members will speak at area schools to announce the event to eager participants. BARK looks forward to having children help in the effort to save stray animals. “We are thrilled that the excitement and festivity of Fallfest will make this fundraiser successful for BARK and its programs. Fallfest is such a huge event in our community! We look forward to it every year and the showing of such cute kids and their pets.” Prizes will be given to kids and their pets for interesting characteristics such as hairiest dog, longest tail, and more. Watch the Clifton Record for details and times for the event or call Whitney Smith, 254.675.7712.

TNMP Community Service Employees Helps BARK - Added: Friday, July 18th, 2008, 2:51 PM

Texas-New Mexico Power employees took on a community service project at the Bosque Animal Rescue Kennel last weekend that involved a roof extension at the kennels for weather projection for the animals. The front extension will offer both extra sun shade and better rain protection. "We really want to thank Roger Mitchell for organizing the project, and especially thank him and Clifton Smith and Kenneth Schwartz for donating their personal time on Saturday to come out to the kennel and work," said spokesman Judy Gremminger. "It is out of the goodness and kindness of their hearts that projects like these get completed." Gremminger noted that last year TNMP employees had also helped with extending the roof on the other side of the kennel, building the "cat walk."

Spring Rummage Sale To Honor Heidi Basham - Added: Friday, July 18th, 2008, 2:50 PM

Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels (BARK) has set April 26 for a fundraising sale to be held in Clifton on 3rd Street near the Blossom Shoppe. The group has collected "jillions of interesting items" for sale, including an assortment of Christian reading, home furnishings, useful gadgets, and "good junk," said spokesman Whitney Smith. To add importance to this event, members chose to honor a founding member, Heidi Basham. She no longer lives in Clifton, but her love of animals has not changed. Basham grew up in Italy and has a degree in psychology. While living on the east coast, she decided she was up for a change and moved to Austin. With a deep interest in animals, she volunteered at both shelters in the city — the Austin Humane Society and the city dog pound. Her time spent there brought her to the conclusion that she wanted to be employed working with animals in some way which led her to find several grooming businesses in the phone directory. She began work as an apprentice and at first did not earn wages. After one year of learning from others, she opened her own grooming business named "Waggin’ Wheel," the first mobile grooming business in Austin. Basham operated the business for the next 12 years before moving with her husband to Clifton to his family’s ranch. There she discovered a talent for goat herding and was able to train her own horse. She reports that often she would find stray animals on the county roads near her home. One trio she adopted included a momma and two feral pups. She named the momma "Zenga," Italian for gypsy. The number of stray and abandoned pets upset her terribly and she wrote several letters to the editor of The Clifton Record about the cruelty of dumping animals. When publisher and former Mayor W. Leon Smith called the first meeting in December 2002 for anyone interested in forming an animal shelter in Clifton, Basham was there. She remained an active member of BARK until she moved to New York. BARK wishes to acknowledge the impact Basham had on the organization as she was one of the founders and shares in the success that BARK has had in working to adopt, spay or neuter, and rescue pets in need. ‘Hearts and BARKS’ A Success! - Added: Friday, July 18th, 2008, 2:50 PM

A full-house was on hand for the fifth annual Hearts and BARKS Gala at the Bosque Conservatory on Saturday night benefiting the Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels, Inc. The evening started with visiting, a silent auction, and the smooth sounds of the Sonny Mack Band in the dining room (Tin Building Theatre). Dinner was served buffet style, all the while accompanied by the band. Following dinner, several awards were presented in appreciation, followed by a live auction, more music and dancing. Judy Gremminger presented flowers to Kimm Dahl for all her help in setting up the gala, then presented lit-up "golden" pooper scoopers to Sandra Woosley and Don Benda for their never-ending help at the kennels. As the main fund-raiser for BARK, the silent auction was spread throughout the entrance hall and atrium with a multitude of items of every kind. The live auction was handled by Tom Henderson at the block, while items such as a freezer and meat donated by Rountree Appliance and Big Buck Meats; several days and nights in condos in Durango and Rockport donated by John and Mary Hastings and Jim and Deborah Canuteson, respectively, and items of art donated by Mike Windsor, Bruce Greene, George Hallmark were sold. Also on the block was a queen-size quilt donated by the Hastings and a Jumbo Gumbo Party donated by Roger Mitchell and his team of culinary experts. Comments heard throughout the evening included many experiences with BARK, including lost and found pets and the dropped-off pets that keep appearing throughout the county. Everyone at the event seemed to have a reason to be there in support of BARK and all seemed to enjoy the variety of the evening, all the while supporting the kennels and the work done by the many volunteers of BARK.
